The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu says Nigerian scientists must show keen interest and deploy their expertise in the study of the Atlantic Ocean because it holds a lot of promise for the future of humanity.
The minister made the call yesterday, while declaring open the first Nigerian/Portuguese Scientific Conference with the theme “Science, Technology and Nigeria/ Portugal collaborative framework” in Abuja. Dr. Onu said it had become urgent for Nigeria to intensify the study of the Atlantic Ocean because it has enormous resources that could be of tremendous benefits to the economy, adding that Nigeria’s participation as founding member of the Atlantic International Research (Air) Center was a remarkable development. He also said that the Collaboration between Nigeria and Portugal was unique as this was the first time such initiative was taking place.
Such collaboration, according to him, will foster proper management of both countries’ resources for peace and prosperity of the world. The Minister further noted that the government was committed and desirous of participating in the search for knowledge because, according to him “we have a lot of resources; we need to find out what are the resources, where the resources are and how to manage them”. Onu also noted that Science and Technology was crucial to the future of any nation, adding that the collaboration between both countries will make for a better future for the two nations and the world at large.
He equally called on scientists to help resolve and make appropriate recommendations on challenging issues on space science and technologies for socioeconomic development. Other issues , he added which needed to be resolved included biotechnology, process and Manufacturing technology, skills development , research and development , Science and society , On the benefits of the recently, launched, Road –Map of the Ministry, he said it would help fight and reduce poverty through economic diversification.
The Roadmap, he added will also promote the commercialization of our research and development results while also creating employment and wealth for the nation. According to him, the Road map would help reduce poverty and support the realization of the goals of The Nigeria Economy growth Plan (NERG) 2017-2020. In his owns speech, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal ,Professor Manuel Heitor, said science and technology was important for the future of humanity and a positive link to the next generation, adding that Portugal was happy to collaborate with Nigeria .
In his remark, the Chairman senate Committee of Science and Technology said that Prof. Ajaji Boroffice said that the conference will enable Nigerians to study and learn how Portuguese develop Research and Development in their country. He assured the Ministry of the support of the National Assembly in realizing the vision and goals of the Minister of science and Technology for the Ministry and the country.
