Donald Trump has arrived in Singapore for his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The US president stepped off his plane at about 1.30pm, hours after Kim arrived in the country where talks will take place.
He flew directly to Singapore from the G7 summit in Canada. Trump briefly spoke with delegates from Singapore before climbing into a black car and leaving the airport. Kim’s flight from North Korea landed earlier on Sunday ahead of the highly anticipated first meeting on Tuesday.
It will be the first time that a North Korean leader has met with a sitting US president. Trump and Kim are set to meet at the Cabella Hotel to discuss denuclearisation of North Korea, in exchange for economic help. Kim is expected to stay at the St Regis hotel and Trump at the Shangri-La. Trump said on Saturday that Kim has a ‘one-time shot’ at reaching a deal with the US.
As he headed to Singapore following the G7 meeting in Canada, Trump said: ‘It is going to work out very well. ‘I really feel confident. I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people and he has that opportunity and he won’t have that opportunity again.’ He added: ‘I think within the first minute I’ll know’ if North Korea is serious about a deal.’
